Renew your AAO membership by mail or online
Annual membership renewal forms are in the mail to all AAO members.  Rather than waiting for your packet, however, you may find it convenient to pay your dues online.

If you pay your dues by mail or fax, please allow 10 to 14 days for the AAO to process your dues payment.  If the association has a valid e-mail address on file for you, you will receive an e-mail confirmation when your payment has been processed.

AAO seeks volunteers to reach out to lawmakers

Make 2010 the year that you help national legislators and policy makers better understand the needs and interests of AAO members and orthodontic patients.  The AAO Professional Advocacy Conference, scheduled January 18-20,will teach volunteers how to lobby those whose actions may affect the practice of orthodontics.

The conference (formerly known as the Government Affairs Conference) will provide AAO member volunteers with the opportunity to put newly learned skills into practice, through Capitol Hill meetings with legislators and their staff members. Discussions will focus on issues important to orthodontic practice.

Space for this conference is limited.  AAO members interested in attending may contact their constituent society's executive director or
Kevin Dillard, AAO Assistant General Counsel.

Mark your calendar for the Mid-Winter Conference
The 2010 conference, "
An Interdisciplinary Update on Dental and Facial Esthetics," will be January 22-24 at the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Palm Springs. The AAO and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are the joint sponsors of the conference.  Registration opens September 3, 2009.

Dr. Stephen E. Hershey elected AAOF president
Dr. Stephen E. Hershey of Clarkston, Michigan has been elected 2009-10 president of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF).  Dr. Hershey has offices in Waterford and Highland, Michigan.

The mission of the AAOF is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting education and research.  As of June 2009, the AAOF fundraising campaign, Continued Commitment to the Specialtysm, has realized $32.4 million in pledges, of which $23.2 million has been redeemed.  Since 1994, the AAOF has contributed $6.6 million to orthodontic education and research, primarily in support of junior orthodontic faculty.

“It is indeed an honor to serve as the AAOF president,” said Dr. Hershey.  “The Foundation’s mission is urgent as the orthodontic specialty seeks to recruit and retain orthodontic faculty.”

Dr. Hershey is a graduate of Michigan State University.  He earned his dental degree at University of Detroit School of Dentistry in 1974.  He was a resident in the Department of Pediatrics at Wyler’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago and received a master’s degree in facial growth and development from the University of Chicago in 1976.  Dr. Hershey completed his orthodontic education at the University of Michigan in 1978 and has been in orthodontic practice since that year.

Long active as an educator, Dr. Hershey has held teaching appointments at the University of Chicago, the University of Detroit and the University of Michigan.  He is the director of Tiago: Orthodontic Educational Resources, which has presented and sponsored accredited continuing education programs in orthodontics for dentists and dental staff members since 1984.

Dr. Hershey has published numerous professional articles in both orthodontics and anthropology.  He has lectured throughout the U.S. and Europe.  Dr. Hershey was an editorial consultant to the AAO’s professional journal, the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, from 1992 to 2004.  He is a Diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontics.

Dr. Hershey joined the AAOF Board of Directors in 2004, representing the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists (GLAO).
