A 2009 article in the British Orthodontic Society Journal of Orthodontics provides nearly 140 references and comprehensive discussion of common medical conditions that can impact orthodontic treatment, including infective endocarditis (IE), bleeding disorders, sickle cell anemia, leukemia, cystic fibrosis, asthma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, viral hepatitis, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, renal disorders, eating disorders, osteoporosis and allergies to materials used during orthodontic treatment.
Effects of medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids and bisphosphonates are also addressed. Each section of the article includes a summary of concerns and a list of orthodontic considerations.
