Laws and regulations formulated in Washington, DC, have a major influence on the practice of orthodontics at the local level. Help shape the Washington agenda and become an advocate for the specialty by attending the AAO Professional Advocacy Conference January 23-25, 2012, in Washington, DC.
This conference puts you front and center with key leaders. Each year, about 7 to 10 members of Congress attend the meeting, which also has featured major political commentators such as Tucker Carlson, Newt Gingrich, Fred Barnes and George Will. The 2012 conference speakers will be announced this fall.
Attendees also receive extensive information from the AAO’s staff and lobbyists about the legislative agenda, including talking points and tips on how to communicate effectively with legislators and their staff. Attendees are grouped in teams, made up of members close in geography, to visit Capitol Hill offices. All meetings are scheduled by the AAO in advance of the meeting.
Because advocacy benefits all AAO members, the association will reimburse transportation to and from the conference, as well as hotel and planned meals.
The conference opens with a reception and dinner with the keynote speaker on Monday, Jan. 23. Tuesday’s session includes presentations from members of Congress and advocacy training. On Wednesday, Jan. 25, attendees will conduct legislative visits on Capitol Hill.
